DOH-Hernando: Mosquito Bite Prevention

By Ashley D. Thomas

June 23, 2017

Brooksville-Preventing mosquito bites not only enhances your enjoyment of outdoor activities, but can also protect you from exposure to Zika and all mosquito-borne illnesses. The Florida Department of Health in Hernando County reminds residents and visitors to protect yourself and your family from mosquito bites.

Environmental Health Director Stefi Depovic, shares the following tips:

  • Shut doors and cover windows with screens;
  • Use EPA approved insect repellant any time you are outdoors;
  • Cover your skin with long sleeves and pants;
  • Avoid being outside at dusk and dawn when mosquito activity is the highest.

Mosquitos lay their eggs in water and just a bottle cap of water is all they need. Be sure to invert all pots and outside containers that may collect rain water.

“Drain, refresh or cover anything that can hold water at least weekly and put away items that aren’t being used.” Depovic added.

“Don’t forget bromeliads,” Depovic concluded. “The leaves of this popular plant can hold water between their leaves, making it a great place for mosquitoes to breed.”

There are currently no areas of ongoing, active transmission of Zika in Hernando County. However, the department advises residents and visitors to remain vigilant about mosquito bite protection.
