We encourage the communities of Hernando County to pursue healthy choices through our Healthy Communities Florida initiative, a public-private collaboration that brings together state agencies, nonprofit organizations, businesses and entire communities to help Florida's children and adults make consistent, informed choices about healthy eating and active living. We are working together to reshape environments so that the healthy choice becomes the easy choice.

Our achievements have helped to move Florida closer to becoming the healthiest state in the nation and we will continue to safeguard and nurture our most valuable resource: health.

These values propel us and our mission forward, allowing us to protect, promote and improve the health of all people in Hernando County through integrated state, county and community efforts.

The Florida Department of Health in Hernando County was established by the Florida Legislature in 1996; however, public health has its roots in Florida dating back to 1888 with the creation of the Florida State Board of Health. Hernando County was officially established on February 27, 1843.

Our health department consists of almost 100 staff in two locations- Spring Hill and Brooksville, ready to serve the needs of the community in a multitude of areas including: Infectious disease treatment and management, Healthy Communities initiatives, Women Infant and Children services, the breast and cervical cancer early detection program, family planning options to those who are underinsured or uninsured, child and adult immunizations, school-based health services, refugee health, and environmental health services- which includes inspections, water programs, biomedical waste, food hygiene, etc. 

Through collaborative efforts with our community partners, we are working together to reshape our environment so that healthy choices are the easiest to make.
