The GHWLC is a community initiative designed to encourage area residents to organize in groups of 10 participants who agree to lose 10 pounds each over the course of 10 weeks.  This year’s Challenge resulted in a combined 6,277 pound weight loss thanks to the enthusiastic participation of 755 area residents and support from many local partners including Oak Hill Hospital, United Way of Hernando County, Brooksville Parks and Recreation Dept, YMCA, Department of Health, The Supervisor of Elections Office, Bayfront Health, Hernando County School District, Hernando County Public Library, and Premier Community HealthCare.

The GHWLC is proudly hosted by CHIPP, Hernando’s Community Health Improvement Plan Partnership, which supports efforts to increase the number of area residents living at a healthy weight. Being overweight can increase the risk of many chronic diseases including heart attack, stroke and diabetes.  Communities with higher percentages of overweight or obese residents have increased health care costs and higher rates of disability and premature death.
